Donald Leo Wheatley Sr., 78, of New Albany, Indiana passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018. He was a 1957 graduate of Providence High School and a United States Marine Corp veteran. Don was a professional carpenter by trade and enjoyed both wine making and beekeeping. He was a man of faith and a long-time member of St. John Paul II Catholic Church.
He was born on November 21, 1939. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Kepley and Henrietta (Bauer) Whitten; brother, Joe Wheatley; and sister-in-law, Susi Hofelich.
Don is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Bette (Lowry) Wheatley; children, Mary Roberds (Steven), Debbie Miles (Kevin), Don Wheatley Jr. (Joetta "Sue"), Dan Wheatley (Melissa); sister, Rose Marie Wilbert (Charles); sister-in-law, Judy Wheatley; brother-in-law, Tom Hofelich; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with three more on the way; and seven nieces and nephews.
Don chose to donate his body to science in the hope that he would give others the opportunity to learn. A reception of family and friends will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany). His memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Paul II Catholic Church (St. Joe Hill campus).
