Gene K. Dick Durlauf, 92, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Autumn Woods Health Campus in New Albany. The son of the late Alexis F. and Caroline (Milward) Durlauf, Dick was born July 31, 1925 in Louisville, KY. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church on 8th Street in New Albany, IN and a member of the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Ritter Council #1221 and 4th Degree. Dick was President of Durlaufs Music Shop until it closed in 1989. His father started the business in 1925. He was a professional musician and member of the Musicians Union Local #11-637 for 77 years. Dick served in the Marine Corp, 5th Division, during WWII in the South Pacific. He has been a member of VFW Post 1693 since 1990, holding many positions. He was Adjutant, Quartermaster for 16+ years, Chaplain, and always volunteered when needed. He became a fixture in the office. He was a member of the American Legion Post #42 and a Kentucky Colonel. He loved spending time with his wife and family and loved them with a never ending love. He enjoyed playing his horn, the tenor sax, professionally and with friends. Dick also enjoyed sharing time with friends at the VFW Post, out of town friends he met through the music store, and friends from church. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his son, Richard Dickie Durlauf; brother, Maxwell Durlauf; and sisters, Virginia Pinky DeSpain and Helen Durlauf.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Gordon Durlauf; children, Michael Durlauf, Lex Durlauf (Jean), Frank Hill, Janet Howard (David), Kim Payne (Jim), Becky Schooler (George Michael), and Jenifer Evans; grandchildren, Jon, Josh, Jessica, Jaelyn, Jackie, Sean, Aaron, and Rob; and 12 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 12:00 pm ~ 8:00 pm Wednesday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. His Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, New Albany, with burial and military honors to follow in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.
