LaVon (Darneal) Harbison, 90, of New Albany, Indiana passed away Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 at Autumn Woods Health Campus in New Albany. She was born in New Albany to the late William S. Pat and Gertrude (Von Alman) Darneal as their only child. She is the last descendent of the family that homesteaded Corydon Pike for generations.
As a Reading Tutor Supervisor for New Albany/Floyd County Schools, she instilled the importance of education in her two sons, who both go on to became public educators. She spent her life as a devoted Democrat and faithful Methodist. Lavon was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church in New Albany, where she served as a Childrens Sunday School Teacher for many years. She graduated from New Albany High School in 1945 and went on to attend Indiana University and DePaul University. ?LaVon was a loving wife to her husband of 54 years, Lewis J. Sam Harbison, from June 12th, 1948 until his death in 2002. They were high school sweethearts and married shortly after he returned from fighting in the Pacific during World Ward II.
She is survived by her sons; Patrick Harbison (Kristin) and Timothy Harbison (Michelle), her grandchildren; Bill Harbison (Laura), Alissa Johnston (Christian) Sam Harbison (Melissa), Marah Harbison (Harper) and her great-granddaughter Grace Harbison.
Visitation will be from 4-8 PM this Saturday at Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes (1119 E. Market St. New Albany, IN).
Her funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM this Sunday in the Market St. Chapel with burial to follow in SCI-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany.
