Marietta's Story

Text size

Marietta Jean (Sieg) Pitt, 92, of New Albany passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at her home surrounded by family. She was born in Corydon, Indiana; the daughter of the late Lenora (Grable) and Charles Taylor Sieg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. C. "Chet" Pitt, and siblings, Garland Sieg and Velma Shacklette.
Marietta was very proud of her family heritage. She is one of the last of 35 grandchildren of Abraham Steven Sieg, and the great-great-granddaughter of Dennis Pennington, one of the founding fathers of the state of Indiana. She loved to tell stories of walking 5 miles to school, working in the hatchery, swimming in the creek, and life on the farm through the depression.
In 1959, as a single mother of 2, she met Chet at a square dance, and they were married in 1960. They had 3 children together, and enjoyed square dancing, traveling, and gardening.
Marietta is survived by five children: Ricke Smith (Linda), Dane Smith (Donna), Autumn Osborne (Bill), Crystal Fryer (Mark Hicks), and Kelly Pitt (Melissa), 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2-8 PM Tuesday and after 10 A.M. Wednesday at the Market St. Chapel of Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes (1119 E. Market St. New Albany, IN)
Her funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Market St. Chapel
Burial will be in SCI Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany
The family would like to thank her caregivers at Silvercrest, Home Instead, and Hosparus for helping her through these last few months.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Floyd County Animal Rescue League or Hosparus Southern Indiana.
