Stanley "Strawberry" Denny passed away Sunday evening, April 16, 2017. The son of the late Harry and Wilma Denny, Stan was born on January 26, 1935, in New Albany, Indiana. His bigger-than-life personality was in a league of its own.
At just barely 17-years-old, Stan graduated New Albany High School ('52) and became a star pitcher at Indiana University. He was drafted from the IU baseball program in 1955 and signed a contract with the New York Giants where he would play professionally through 1959, ending his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
His career took many turns. A talented artist, Stan was hired as the first art teacher at Providence High School, where he also taught history and coached baseball. From there, he moved on to a sales position at Harbor Industries, and finally found his passion in sports photography. His photography career sent him to Cincinnati to shoot the Bengals and Reds, and you could always find him in the dugout as staff photographer at the Louisville Red Birds turned Louisville Bats. Like it or not, Stan was also delegated official family photographer, guilted into lugging his equipment to every one of his grandkids' little league games and birthday parties.
Stan shared a love of family with his wife of 61 years, Joyce. He also shared with her his credit card to support her shopping habit. Stan was a devoted "Daddy" and doting grandfather and great-grandfather. He prided himself on teaching his grandkids inappropriate riddles.
Stan was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. His sense of humor will live on as his family will honor his wishes to have his headstone read: "I'd rather be here than Wrigley!"
He is preceded in death by his wife Joyce (Zurschmiede) Denny. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Pete Tucker, son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Dawn Denny; grandchildren, Steve Beyl (Corinne), Sarah Furlow (Chris), Kristina Van Laan (Tim), Lucas Denny (Alex), Grace and LuLu Denny; and great-grandchildren, Kramer and Truman Beyl, Mikel and Roman Furlow and Stanley and Adeline Van Laan; brother Lynn Denny; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty Jo and Doc Braitling; good friends Tim Easley, Patrick Pfister and Bill Luster.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. Funeral service will be noon on Thursday in the Kraft Charlestown Road Chapel, New Albany.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Providence High School or Hosparus of Southern Indiana in Stan's name.
