Sylvan's Story

Sylvan Glen "Syd" Payne, 95, of New Albany, Indiana passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Clark Memorial Hospital. He was a NAHS and U of L graduate. Syd was a member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Gideons and the USS Shangri-La Assoc. After using farm equipment and working at the Charlestown Ammunition plant for E.I. Dupont he entered WWII as a Naval Aviator flying the SBZC in the Pacific. He remained in the reserves and he and his wife were owner/operators of Payne's Hardware in New Albany for many years. He was a calm but firm individual, who accepted Jesus as his savior, and is now with his Lord.
He was preceded in death by: parents, Russell John Payne and Laura Ellen Meyer Payne; his wife, F. Maxine Simpson Payne.
Survivors include his daughter, Sherri L. Payne, and several cousins and friends. Visitation, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church, New Albany. Funeral, 2 p.m. Friday at the church with burial at Mt. Tabor Cemetery. Expressions, Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church or the Gideons.
