My family has been close friends with the Kenneth and Betty Sauer family since I was born over 60 years ago. I felt that Father Simon (as well as the extended Sauer clan) was a part of our family. We relished the stories he would share from his trips and experiences abroad. we will miss him. Our condolences to all of the family.

Fr. Simon was a second cousin of my mother, Bernadine Steinmetz Purcell. Growing up it was always a joy to receive news from Fr. Simon about his work and the people he served in Africa. We kept in touch through the years. My last visit with him was last fall when he was at Mercy-Providence in New Albany. At an earlier visit when he was still living at the Mount, I had taken him a copy of a chart showing how we were related. He loved seeing it and we spent time talking about our families--Droppleman and Determan branches. I was always touched by his kind and gentle ways. I cherish the memories I have of him and hold him and his family in prayer at this time. I know he suffered in his ...last years but is at peace now.Read more

My grandmother was Bernardina Droppleman- Steinmetz. My mother, Bernadine Rose Steinmetz-Purcell was a cousin to Fr. Simon and was very proud to be close to him. They corresponded when he was in Africa and visited when he was home every one or two years. Fr. Simon said the Mass at my Father's funeral. He was a very giving and kind person. All of the Purcell family sends our prayers and thanksgiving for his life and spiritual influence on all that he came in contact with during his lifetime.
