Raymond "Ray" Bruce Jr., 86 of Ellenton, Florida, passed away at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at the Complex Care Hospital in Sarasota, FL. He was born October 29, 1930 in Louisville, KY to Raymond Bruce Sr. and Nellie (Hood) Bruce. He married Margaret Purvis on January 15, 1951.
Raymond's parents preceded him in death. Survivors are one son, Raymond Bruce III (Julie), Austin, IN and three daughters, Terri (Martin) Shockley of Floyds Knobs, IN, Susan (Dane) Moore of Pilgrim, KY, Patti (Donald) Higdon of Callahan, FL; seven grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren.
Ray grew up in Louisville, KY then moved to Syracuse, NY during high school. After marriage, he spent 33 years in New Albany, IN then retired in Salem, IN and moved to Ellenton, FL for the last 17 years of his life.
His teaching career began at Fairmont Elementary School and then two years later he became the principal at Grant Line Elementary School. The gym was renamed in his honor in 1990.
Ray was also heavily involved in farming. In 1983, he started a dairy that at one timed milked over 100 cows daily. His other activities included: President of Hoosier Antique Car Club Dairymen Association, the National Democratic Party, Floyd County Camping Club, Vice President of Colony Cove Lakes Association, Joyce and Friends Singing Group, member of Friendly Social Club, and member of New York State Club. He loved camping, water skiing, and boating on Nolin Lake and traveling throughout the U.S. and aboard.
Visitation will be from 4- 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in the Grant Line Elementary School gym, 4811 Grant Line Road, New Albany, IN. The service will start at 5 p.m. at the same location. Reverend Garry Pate will be officiating. The burial will be at Cave Spring Cemetery in Westview, KY at a later date.
Donations may be sent to the Grant Line PTO with Raymond Bruce Jr. in the memo. A memorial plaque will be purchased and placed at the school. The address is 4811 Grant Line Road, New Albany, IN, 47150.
