Thomas's Story

Text size

Thomas Edward Denny, age 72, went to be with the Lord at his home in Chandler, Arizona, on April 11, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones. Tom was born at Fort Sill military base in Oklahoma. Although his father was in the Army and lived in several places, including St. Paul, Minnesota, Tom spent most of his childhood in New Albany, Indiana, graduating from New Albany High School. He attended Indiana University and Murray State University where he received his B.S. in Finance in 1968.

Tom married the love of his life, Diane, in 1968. In 1969, they moved to Colorado. They began a family and Tom worked as a Commercial Lender and Bank President for the majority of his career. They were happily married for 49 years.

Throughout his adult life, he was very active in many things; Kiwanis, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Masons (33rd degree) were three of his longtime commitments. He thoroughly enjoyed helping others and believed strongly in the teachings of the Boy Scouts and mentoring the boys. After moving to Arizona, he continued his community service in several ways. Kiwanis and Boy Scouts were activities he continued, but he also became a member of the CERT Team (Chandler Emergency Response Team), and a Posse member for Sheriff Joe Arpaio. In the spirit of helping others, he would help the elderly with tasks around the house at no charge. Tom was a very giving person, always giving of himself without any expectation of anything in return. He was always a strong advocate for exercise and nearly every day could be seen taking a run or walk.

Tom, a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, was a member of the Chandler United Methodist Church. In Arizona, he was the Chaplain for Troop 283 in the Grand Canyon Council. He had worked at previous Jamborees and was planning to attend and work the 2017 Jamboree.

His pride and affection for his family was the center of his life. He always looked forward to his children's visits.

Tom was preceded in death by his father, Edward; and his mother, Ruth. He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughters, Michelle Nichols (Brian) and Kristi Salinas (Jaime); son, Patrick Denny; grandson, Jacob Salinas; sister, Sue Block; and his nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

Memorial Visitation will be from 10 am ~ 11 am Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. His Memorial Service will be 11 am Saturday in the Kraft Charlestown Road Chapel with burial to follow in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany.

Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Chandler United Methodist Church or the Boy Scouts of America.
