Charlestown, IN - Alfred "Al" Lee Thompson, 94, of Charlestown, IN, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 1, 2026.

Al was born to the union of Ernest and Truman Thompson in a one room log cabin among the rolling hills of Taylor County, KY March 14, 1932. This simple subsistence farming lifestyle in harmony with the seasons among the close bonds of family and friends in a time before electricity and automobiles helped form the character of who he was.

Al would do anything in his power, any time of day, for anyone in need and his love for his family and friends knew no bounds. His word was as dependable as the rising sun and his hard work and loyalty to others never faltered.

Al proudly served his country in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954, and later returned to the Army, serving in Heidelberg Germany for three years. Upon returning to Jeffersonville, IN, Al met the love of his life, Nancy Louise Clive, at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library. They married on March 26, 1966 at Faith Lutheran Church and he departed this life in her arms over 60 years later.

Al was a dedicated hard worker for his family and began his own printing business with one press; yet years of hard work flourished and served the Jeffersonville local community for 26 years as T&L Printing Co. After retirement, he proudly served in the Sellersburg Color Guard, worked at Perrin Park and served at Faith Lutheran Church. Al became a long distance runner later in his forties running several marathons and found his life-long friends through running. He and Nancy greatly enjoyed time with their grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, simple backyard gatherings with family, and their occasional adventures out west to visit Shelley.

Al could be described as soft spoken and gentle yet his love and service to God, his family and friends spoke volumes in his everyday life.

Left to carry his legacy is his loving wife of 60 years, Nancy Thompson; sister, Pamela Keeling (Rusty); children, Carrie Emerson (Kevin), and Shelley Grimes (Richie); grandchildren, Laken Heitz, Spencer Comingore, Macie Comingore, Simon Grimes, Jesse Grimes; great-grandchildren, Ollie Heitz, and soon-to-arrive, Sophie Heitz. Al was a grandfather to Shelley's godson, Eddie Paulin, as well as many foster children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Truman Thompson; brother, Otis Thompson (Linda); and sisters, Opal Eddings (Clyde), Shirley Caraway (Chuck) and Connie Schenk (Glenn).

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, IN, with military honors and burial to follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 AM to 11 AM on Friday at the funeral home.
