Betty Jean Applegate ("Little Jeanie") Obituary

Jeffersonville, Indiana - Betty Jean "Little Jeanie" Applegate, born July 14, 1933, went to her heavenly home on June 16, 2024 at the age of 90. Jeanie was a loyal and faithful servant of the lord and a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Born in Jeffersonville, Jeanie attended Jeffersonville High School where she was a member of the "Dizzy Dozen." After high school, she went to work at the Ammunition Plant until she met the love of her life and started her family. She was most proud of this chapter which she spent devoted to raising her five children. Many remember her driving to sporting activities, cooking, and "being a second mom."

From 1980 - 2000, Jeanie worked at IUS. She loved the athletes, and they loved her. Always going that extra mile to help out wherever she was needed: selling tickets, raising money, helping the work study students, and keeping the concession stand open during the games, she was a wonderful asset to the Athletic Department.

Jeanie was always dedicated to caring for the needs of others: delivering Meals on Wheels, volunteering at the Center for Lay Ministries, providing food for funeral dinners, and most recently cleaning Sacred Heart with the other "Heavenly Dusters." Very social, Mom was active in various Bridge and Euchre clubs and was an avid walker with her friends at Perrin Park. Her final months were spent at Bridgepoint Gardens where she met many new friends and received great attention and care.

Jeanie is survived by her children, Lisa (Jeff) Sordelet, Julie (Andy) Goodman, Col. Brad (Erin) Applegate, Alan (Linda) Applegate, and Jane "Jamie" Applegate; her brother Doc (Betty Joe) Braitling; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Gran was very happy to tell others, "All are happy and healthy." She was preceded in death by her parents Richard C. and Anna Mary Braitling, brother Duke and sister-in-law Betty Braitling, sister Mary Ann Brinkworth and brother-in-law John Brinkworth.

"Granny's" friendships and positive influences spanned many generations. She will be lovingly remembered for a "life well lived" and will be sorely missed by all.

Visitation will be held at Coots' Funeral Home from 2 - 8 p.m. Thursday, June 20 with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.. Funeral service, 11 a.m. Friday, June 21 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank Dr. Rose and Dr. Lewis from Norton Hospital, and Hosparus Health, Louisville.

Donations can be made to the Center for Lay Ministries, Jeffersonville, American Diabetes Association or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
