Dr. Brent Raymond Ellmers, a dedicated and compassionate general surgeon, loving husband, and devoted father, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, in Savannah, Georgia, where he was honored to care for our military soldiers and their families at Winn Army Community Hospital.
Brent was born on September 8, 1962, to Edwin "Skip" Ellmers and the late Betty Ellmers and grew up in New Albany, Indiana. His life was defined by service, faith, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.
He attended Butler University, where he became a proud brother of Sigma Chi, and later earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, always cheering for Hoosier basketball. In 1990, he began his surgical residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he met the love of his life, nurse Renee Jacisin. Their love story spanned 31 years of marriage, built on mutual respect, support, and a shared dedication to caring for others.
In 1998, Brent, Renee, and their son, Ben, moved to Dunn, North Carolina, where he established his surgical practice and found great joy in serving the community. For the past seven years, he has been honored to serve our nation's soldiers and military families at Winn Army Community Hospital, a role he embraced with the deepest sense of duty and gratitude. His weekly commute to Georgia was a testament to his selfless devotion to his patients and profession.
Brent loved being a surgeon, and his life's purpose was to heal and comfort those in need. His strong faith in God guided his actions, and his tender heart was evident in how he cared for his patients. Tears would often well up in his eyes when he encountered former patients whose lives he had touched. His kindness, humility, and dedication had a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Beyond medicine, Brent enjoyed cooking and the outdoors—boating, fishing, hunting with Ben and cherished grand dog Ruby, putting up Christmas lights for all to enjoy, and so much more. He also treasured his time as a Scoutmaster for Troop 711, where he mentored and supported young men on their journey to adulthood.
Brent is survived by his loving wife, Renee Ellmers of Dunn; his beloved son, Benjamin Ellmers of Dunn; his brother, Glen Ellmers of Cary; his sister, Karen Ellmers of Jeffersonville, Indiana; his nephew, Kevin Jacisin; and his nieces, Allison Lagstrom, Jennifer Ensley, Theresa Flores, Megan Miller, Mackenzie Miller, and Amy Kavanaugh, along with their children.
Brent's legacy of compassion, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community will live on in the countless lives he touched. His memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
A Rosary will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2025, and visitation from 4 - 6 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home.
A private funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Brent's name in honor of his loving mother, Betty Ellmers, and mother-in-law, Caroline Jacisin.
