Francis Furnish (Butch) Obituary

Francis "Butch" Furnish passed away on December 20, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in St. Edward's Hospital in New Albany, IN on February 10, 1941. His parents were Herman "Red" Furnish & Frances (Appell) Furnish. He was a lifelong resident of Henryville, IN.

At the age of 5 Butch contracted Polio. There was no vaccine available at that time. Polio was quite a nuisance to him throughout his life and played a part in his downfall at the end.

Butch graduated from Henryville High School in 1959. He bought the Marathon Station in 1963 (the year Janice graduated from Indiana State University and also the year they got married).

He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Church, where he had served as usher as well as a council member. Butch held offices in Kiwanis, the sewer corporation, the water corporation, & the Fire Fighter's Association.

Butch was instrumental in starting 3 Kiwanis Clubs including Henryville, Charlestown, & Sellersburg, (who had disbanded & he got them started again).

He is still planning on getting the "Welcome to Henryville" sign put up with the help of you citizens and the Community Center Members.

Butch loved his golden retriever, Lucy. It was a surprise Father's Day Gift about 6 years ago. He was the last of 6 special friends. They had some good times together.

He was preceded in death by his parents & sister, Sandra (Furnish) Banet, brothers-in-law, James Munk, and Henry Gilley. His surviving family consists of a loving wife, Janice (Munk) Furnish, a sister Barbara (Furnish) Gilley of Charlestown, IN and a brother Steven Furnish of Fort Lauderdale, FL & his longtime friend, Loren Von Falkenbach, sister-in-law Joan (Steve) Stone, Dian Munk, and brothers-in-law Joe Banet, & Jerry (Judy) Munk.

Butch loved being with his 4 children, 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grands. Two of the grandchildren are twins as well as 2 of the great-grands. What a treat!

His 4 children and their spouses survive him: Mark (Janna) Furnish, Lisa (Mark) Guthrie, Greg (Shelly) Furnish, & Erik (Kathy) Furnish.

Also surviving are the 13 grandchildren: Avery (Hunter) Estes, Kendall (Zachary) Unrau, Cameron (Kayla) Furnish, Tyler (Jill) Guthrie, Ashton (Katie) Guthrie, Brookelynn (Austin) Richards, Landon Guthrie, Conner, Chandler, Caleigh, Ethan, Clayton, & Mary Furnish.

The Great Grands are Kelsey, Wyatt, Annistyn Guthrie, Elliott, Isla, Oliver, Addie Guthrie, Preston, Elijah Guthrie, Annaleece & Cooper Richards, Violet Furnish, and one baby expected in June 2024.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at Noon. Family and friends may visit from 10:00 AM until Noon on the same day. A graveside service will follow at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery.
