George Myers "Gerry" Lewis Sr. Obituary
New Albany, Indiana - George Myers "Gerry" Lewis Sr., 81, of New Albany, Indiana, passed away peacefully January 9, 2021. Larger than life, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great- grandfather. Born to his late parents, James Lewis Sr. and Helen (Myers) Lewis.
Gerry attended the Culver Military Academy and graduated from New Albany High School in 1957. He then graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Indiana University School of Business in 1961 where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. While at IU, he served in the ROTC and received his Army commission, which lead him to Germany.
After his service abroad, Gerry worked for the Simmons Mattress Company and became the leading salesman for his territory. Gerry then returned to assist in the family business, The Indiana Candy Company. Next, he started Lewis Vending and Coffee Service, which he later sold to pursue his passion with the military. Gerry, a retired Colonel in the US Army, enjoyed 30 years of service both Active and Reserve. During his service, he received multiple awards, which include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Award (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), The Army Commendation Medal, plus several other honors. Upon retirement from the military, Gerry pursued several other entrepreneurial ventures to include Tidy Taco.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where his mother and father were lifelong members. Gerry never met a stranger and always had a warm and welcoming smile on his face. He led his life by example and loved his family and friends.
A long-time member of (the NACC), New Albany Country Club, he enjoyed playing golf with friends and getting together with "The Class of 57". He loved traveling and vacationing with his wife Barb and many friends. Gerry was a huge animal lover; he especially loved his dog DJ.
He will be greatly missed, but his spirit will live on through his family, friends, and the many lives he inspired.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Barbara, children Leslie Lewis-Sheets (Tommy), George Myers Lewis Jr. "Little Gerry" (Angela), grandchildren Patia Young (Matt), Murphy Sheets, Emory Lewis, Ben Lewis, and great-grandchild Roland Young.
