Maryetta Marguet Obituary

New Albany, IN - Maryetta Marguet (née McMurray), 92, passed away peacefully at the Villages at Silvercrest in New Albany, Indiana, on July 19, 2025, with family members surrounding her.

Born on August 8, 1932, in Thorntown, Indiana, Maryetta was the daughter of educators Madge and Floyd I. McMurray, and sister to older brother, Devon. Floyd moved the family to Clarksville in 1941 to found IU Southeast. Maryetta attended New Albany High School, where she met her husband of 71 years, Joseph (Joe) Marguet, who sat behind her in homeroom. Maryetta and Joe were the first class to broadcast radio programs on WNAS, the world's oldest student-operated radio station. She went on to attend Indiana University in Bloomington.

During the Korean War, both Maryetta and Joe worked at the Dupont gunpowder plant—Joe as a draftsman and Maryetta as a secretary. In 1964, they moved to the house they built on their beloved farm, where they lived for 58 years. Maryetta began working as a substitute teacher in the Floyd County School System, later teaching kindergarten in the 1970s. She also held roles at the Indiana Census Bureau and helped convert the family's New Albany Box and Basket Factory's payroll operations to a computerized system in the 1980s. She continued serving the community through years of volunteer work at the Carnegie Center.

Maryetta was curious and creative. She loved music and often filled the house with the sound of her playing the piano. She was an avid reader, a passionate genealogist, and a whiz at crossword puzzles, Sudoku and Jeopardy. She and Joe shared an interest in charting birds migrating through the farm. They also traveled extensively, exploring Europe and Australia together. They proudly visited all 50 U.S. states. Maryetta made a voyage across the Atlantic on the Queen Elizabeth II and toured South America.

Maryetta is survived by her husband, Joseph I. Marguet, their five children, Susan Marguet (Ron Nash), Sally Davidson (David), Jimmy Marguet, Patty Marguet (Jim Miller), and Marilyn Khadr (Karim). Ten grandchildren: Ben and Sam Nash (Alice Clark); Katie and Joe Davidson; Preston, Michael, and Jessica Marguet; Alex Khadr (Jenni), Camille Abou (Marv), and Sabina Khadr; great-grandchild, Roman Khadr; and her sisters-in-law, Mimi Paris (Larry) and Mary Marguet.

Maryetta is predeceased by her parents, Madge and Floyd I. McMurray, her brother Devon McMurray (Barbara), and brother-in-law Frank Marguet.

There will be a private family memorial service and inurnment.
