Michael Day (Mike) Obituary
Sellersburg, Indiana - Michael (Mike) Day passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, after battling anxiety and depression. Mental illness can cloud the mind, distort the truth, and make someone believe things that simply aren't real. These emotions ultimately became too much for him to cope, and he died by suicide. Our hearts are broken, but we take solace in knowing he is no longer hurting and is at peace with the Lord. We hold on to the truth of who Mike was - his kindness, his humor, and the way he made others feel. That is the man we will remember.
Mike will be remembered first and foremost for the way he loved his family. He loved his wife and two daughters fiercely—they were his whole world. Mike showed up in every way that mattered, often without being asked. Whether it was coaching track, driving countless miles for soccer practices, games, and tournaments throughout high school and college, or simply being there when he was needed, he was a constant, steady, and devoted presence.
Mike and Beth raised their daughters to love the Lord, living out that faith in their everyday lives. Their family found homes in Northside Christian and Southeast Christian Church - Indiana Campus, where they continued to grow in faith together.
Mike's love for sports started early and stayed with him throughout his life. He was proud to be part of the Providence High School 1984 sectional championship basketball team—back before the class system—and went on to play at IU Southeast, where he earned All-American honors. In more recent years, you could find him on the pickleball court, laughing and competing with lifelong friends. He also found great joy in mentoring and coaching students over the years.
To know Mike was to feel seen. He had a way of making people feel important, often through his kindness, his humor, and his unforgettable personality. He loved to laugh, and his crazy antics and quick wit brought joy and light to so many.
For 31 years at Silver Creek High School, Mike did more than teach math—he connected with students. He had a special gift for making math make sense (and even making it fun), and his creativity and care left a lasting impression on generations of students.
Above all, Mike will be remembered for his big heart, his deep love for his family, and the way he made people feel. The impact he had on others will live on in the many lives he touched.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Everett ("Ev") Day.
He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Beth; his daughters, Margaret Hughes (Josh) and Natalie; his mother, Patricia Day; his brother, Charlie Day (Lisa); his sisters, Denise Ernstberger (Tim) and Therese Stevens (Lewie); and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Mike's life will be held at 12 Noon Saturday April 11, 2026 at Silver Creek High School (557 Renz Ave., Sellersburg, IN.) with burial in SCI-Graceland Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:30 PM - 8:30 PM Friday at Silver Creek High School and from 9 AM - 12 Noon Saturday at the high school before the service.
