Samuel Thomas Lahanis Obituary

Richmond, Indiana - Samuel Thomas Lahanis, age 67, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away shortly before midnight on March 7th, 2026, at Reid Hospital in Richmond with Yana and Sandie at his bedside.

Samuel was born in Evansville, Indiana on February 1st, 1959, to John Samuel Lahanis and Georgia Tsoumas Lahanis. He had three sisters - Yana, Meme, and Theodora - and two brothers - Gus and Bill. Sam grew up in Evansville, where he attended Culver Grade School, Bosse High School, Oakland City Community College, and the University of Evansville. He was a standout athlete in wrestling and football - achieving conference, sectional, regional and All State recognition in both. Sam was voted 1st Team Evansville All City Quarterback Club and inducted into the Greater Evansville Football Hall of Fame in 2016. He, like the rest of his siblings, started his working life in the family business - Sam's Cleaners. After the University of Evansville, Sam began work in the City of Evansville serving as the Superintendent of Oak Hill Cemetery and Executive Director of Transportation. In New Albany, he was the Director of Wastewater Management and then on to Richmond, Indiana where he served as the Director of Wastewater Management. He met his long-time companion and surviving loved one, Sandie Rowe, at a Richmond Kiwanis function where their love story began. Sam enjoyed golf, sports, fishing, food, friends, movies and television and his beloved dog, Gigi.

He is survived by loved ones, Sandie Rowe, Yana and husband, Stewart; Gus and wife, Nina; Bill; Meme and husband, Jerry; and Theodora and husband, Tom. Sam did not have children of his own but considered nieces and nephews - Alexandra, Zachary, Victoria, Athena, Niko, Marcus, Lucas, Adam, Tori, Margot, George, and Lily - to be incredibly special people in his life - and they will dearly miss him.

Sam was preceded by his parents, John and Georgia.

We would like to recognize the superior care provided by Reid Hospital, the Indiana University Hospital and The Springs nursing home.
